A book that has been useful thinking about jobs:

Bullshit Jobs: A Theory by David Graeber

https://www.amazon.com/Bullshit-Jobs-Theory-David-Graeber/dp...

One thing from it that has been stuck in my mind: a common occurrence of people hating their jobs despite being paid to do quite-literally nothing. Part of the reason is that people generally want to be useful to society, and when they see their job as not doing that, it's hard to care or find satisfaction.

I don't apply for jobs anymore at companies where you have to prepare for interviews after reading this book:

>if you remove the human aspect and insist on framing the issue like that, can't we say the same thing for almost any job?

- If the only purpose you have in a job is to boost your ego and brag I think we can go ahead and eliminate that job.

- If the only purpose you have in a job is to chose the colors in an excel spreadsheet cells I think we can go ahead and eliminate that job.

- If the only purpose you have in a job is to do something a machine can do better I think we can go ahead and eliminate that job.

- If the only purpose you have in a job is to farm kind animals to later cruelly kill them I think we can go ahead and eliminate that job.

- If the only purpose you have in a job is to make money for yourself I think we can go ahead and eliminate that job.

Well... yes, we should. The last one is obviously unreasonable since we live in a society where money is required to live most lifestyles. I recommend reading Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber: https://www.amazon.com/Bullshit-Jobs-Theory-David-Graeber/dp...

I think you're too easily taking for granted that having a job makes one a productive member of society.

Gig: Americans Talk About Their Jobs

https://www.amazon.com/Gig-Americans-Talk-About-Their/dp/060...

It's basically a series of interviews with people across various industries talking about their jobs. Not exactly "memoir"-style but more of an anthology.

Bullshit Jobs: A Theory by David Graeber

A personal favorite that I read alongside the first recommendation. Just puts a lot of things in perspective with respect to finding meaningful work.

For context, David Graeber is an anarchist anthropologist who has written extensively about economics. His two best-known works on the subject:

His views are surely influenced by his a-priori politics, but I've found his ideas thought-provoking to say the least.

This blog post was so painful for me to read.

This is a symptom of "bullshit" going on around in big tech companies. "bullshit" here is an economic term defined in the book "bullshit jobs". https://www.amazon.com/Bullshit-Jobs-Theory-David-Graeber/dp...

Reading through the post, I was noticing

So much corporate Jargon which really does not mean anything important.

Dehumanizing language when describing people interviewing and being interviewed and its process.

Too much obfuscation of ideas that can be very simply explained.

glorification of simpler problems into heroic challenges.

Delusions of Grandeur.

Today's such jobs are tomorrows layoffs.

I think I will stop here. I have crossed my negativity threshold for the day.
