I suspect many commenters here have never been grad students or academics, have never been foreign or have never dealt with immigration constraints, so they necessarily interpret events through their own lens. This is normal -- we're all limited in our perspectives until we're invested in a topic. I'm the same. Even international students themselves only know part of the story. But the truth is often more complicated and there are different outcomes for different populations.
